Our Pastor since April 2005, Rev. Chaz Hutchison, has been on the ministerial staff since August 1990, originally coming to us as the Director of Christian Education. Ordained by the Scotch Plains Baptist Church in April 1994, Pastor Chaz continues to be involved in the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey serving at various times on the Camps, Conferences and Retreats Committee, and currently serving on the Executive Committee of the ABCNJ Ministers Council, and as Treasurer for the Watchung Association. Since 1992 Chaz has been the Session Director for Junior High Conference at Camp Lebanon.

In 1986 Pastor Chaz received his bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Alderson-Broaddus College, which is where he met his future bride Carol “CJ” Wright.  After their wedding in June of 1987, Chaz continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating with a Master of Arts in Religious Education in 1990.

Pastor Chaz and Carol live with their daughter, Ashley and loving vizsla Bailey. Carol, with a Master’s degree in education and certifications in both Elementary and Special Education currently teaches third grade. The whole family is active in Special Olympics and serving through Baptist Camp Lebanon.  They enjoy finding the hidden treasures of New Jersey and a typical “family day” may mean discovering a new hiking trail, exploring an historic site, or tracking down an area buffalo farm.

Mercifully leaving the girls at home, Pastor Chaz can often be found, camera in hand, exploring one of the many old cemeteries in the area. (And, truth be told, in just about any other state if he can sneak one in.)  He often gives tours of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church Cemetery including a popular “lantern tour” each fall.
